Best Bars to Party at for the NYC Halloween Parade
Posted by: mike | October 18th, 2009Halloween is quickly approaching and what better way to get into the spirit then to get completely hammered?! Well, we’ve got you covered for the country’s largest Halloween Parade on Saturday October 31st. Starting at 7pm at Spring Street, thousands of people will make their way up 6th avenue to 21st street, dressed up in everything from Chewbacca to Presidents of the past and present, to people actually wearing nothing at all. You can join the parade or join us while we sit back and relax in one of these top 10 bars to watch this year’s parade. Keep in mind to get out early because as you make you’re way over to 6th ave you’ll get lost in a sea of people and you’ll never get close to the action.
1. Sheridan Square - Greenwich Village - This is a great spot because it has a pretty big open bar area. The restaurant is completely open to the outside so you have a clear shot of all of the festivities just outside on 6th Ave. Check to see if you need a reservation before you go and make sure you’re broadcasting!
2. Bar Pitti - Greenwich Village - This one is a little upscale and you’re probably more likely to see a celebrity here than any other bar on this list. There’s plenty of outdoor seating but you may not get in if you’re wearing a superman costume. We recommend going here well dressed or not at all.
3. Da Silvano - Greenwich Village - I guess you could say the same for this place as I did for Bar Pitti above because they are just about the same place. Literally, they are right next to each other and sometimes I feel like they share eachother’s sidewalk seating. Upscale, Italian, celebrity spot.
4. French Roast - West Village - Here’s another one just a block away from Sheridan Square but on the East side of 6th Ave. They also have outdoor seating and large windows so patrons have a clear shot at the parade.
5. Karavas - Greenwich Village - This greek place is the perfect corner spot for all of the halloween action. It has a couple levels so there is plenty of room but you’ll need to be upstairs in order to see the parade. No outdoor seating
6. Bar 6 - West Village - Ok, so are you sensing a theme here? Yes, all of the bars are along the parade route up 6th Ave. Now, Bar 6 is a cool little bar/restaurant that serves a pretty good burger. The bar up in the front of the room is small and cozy with sidewalk seating. Get here early because space is limited.
7. Pieces Bar - Greenwich Village - This one made the list because of its location and happy hour specials. It’s a pretty decent gay bar but not your typical over-the-top-guys-half-naked gay bar…although on Halloween night, all that may be tossed out the window. It has a great big window in front for maximum parade viewage and if you’re looking for a place to really “experience” the Halloween parade then this is the place for you.
8. The Street with a Flask - 6th Avenue - No seriously, this might be your best option because the bars are almost impossible to get to unless you start getting out there at 4pm. The best spot to do this is at the basketball courts on 6th Ave between West 3rd and 4th streets. Plus, if you find your flask dry, you can hop over to one of the many bars along West 3rd like The Town Tavern and Fat Black Pussycat.
9. The Slaughter’d Lamb - Greenwich Village - Mainly because it’s name stirs up gruesome thoughts of Halloween, this bar is a nice spot to take in the parade festivities. Located just off of 6th Ave on West 4th Street, you’ll be sure to see plenty of costumes and parade goers at this hallowed village bar.
10. Sala One Nine - Flatiron - Ok, so this place isn’t right on the parade route but is purely a strategic choice for this top 10 list. This spanish tapas restaurant is located on 19th street right off of 6th Avenue, situated pretty much at the end of the parade. Its a great choice because of it’s great huge window and front room bar giving your a front row seat to hundreds of Halloween paraders. If you’re looking to get away from the throngs of people and relax alittle bit, Sala One Nine’s window is one of the best people watching spots in the city.
*Honorable Mention - The Town Tavern and Porky’s because they’re right off of 6th Ave and always nuts for Halloween…Also Rogue just north at the end of the parade route for the after parties.
